Recession is a period of temporary economic decline during which trade and industrial activities experience a downturn. It is generally identified by a fall in gross domestic product (GDP) in two successive quarters. During this period, companies both big and small struggle for survival, thus bringing about calculated strategies like austerity and cost-cutting measures to make room for necessary savings.
However, in a constantly changing world where technology is advancing at a rate faster than nearly everyone can keep up with, most companies have a hard time tackling change. We are, after all, human and would rather stick to tried methods even if they are outdated.
Clearly, change is inevitable if the wheels of business must be kept in motion. Fortunately, there is an assortment of innovative tools and solutions waiting to be tapped to navigate the process and help businesses avoid contraction. For instance, seeing that organizations spend so much on communications, a cost-effective solution to mitigate such costs is the Closed-User Group (CUG) which enables people in the same group to call one another at a hugely discounted rate.
Critically too is the productivity boosting biometric time attendance solution that provides real-time data on the performance of your human resources and ensures that work inputs, payroll, compensation as well as reward systems are accurate and transparent.
This solution has been known to enhance steps that human resource experts have outlined such as defining work-related expectations; training managers to be more supportive of employees; striving for employee loyalty; focusing on results and pay for performance.
Some economists have suggested that the most exciting time for businesses to grow is in a recession. Thus, it is not advisable for your business to stand still while competitors enjoy the propitious benefits of having at their fingertips the vital human resources data that will boost employee commitment and productivity.

Absenteeism is an employee’s intentional or habitual absence from work. While employers expect workers to miss a certain number of workdays each year due to illness or some other unforeseen circumstance, excessive absence can inevitably lead to decreased productivity, which impacts negatively on company performance, finances and even morale.
While studies show that annual costs associated with absenteeism vary by industry, the scarce financial resources of companies are being eroded by continually paying the wages of absentee employees in addition to the cost of replacement workers such as overtime pay for other employees and/or temporary workers. And that is before accounting for administrative costs of managing absenteeism which should have been properly channeled to increase the company’s profit margin.
Furthermore, absenteeism causes poor quality of goods/services resulting from overtime fatigue or understaffing, reduced productivity, excess managerial time (dealing with discipline and finding suitable employee replacements), safety issues (inadequately trained employees filling in for others or rushing to catch up after arriving as a replacement, etc.), and poor morale among employees who have to “fill in” or do extra work to cover absent coworkers.
Illustrated below is a statistical survey carried out by Jean Folger on the value of the annual cost of loss of production in dollars associated with absenteeism by occupation:
Professional (excluding nurses, physicians and teachers)
School teachers (K-12)
As stated in our previous article, absenteeism is a disorder that is very difficult to tackle, because just as there are poor excuses for missing work, there are legitimate ones also. Whatever the case, these can best be managed by putting effective tools in place to properly monitor, control and reduce the menace of absenteeism.
