10 May BENEFITING FROM TIME MANAGEMENT

africantimel

Time management is the act or process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency or productivity. Wikipedia…

“Time management” refers to the way that you organize and plan how long you spend on specific activities. Mindtools…

The highest achievers manage their time exceptionally well, as it is often said being busy isn’t the same as being effective but being smart at work, being smart is managing your arrays of to do list as the end justifies the means.

Time management has come up as a subject in the management field to reach the goal of increasing productivity, it relates to all works of life such as individual career, schools, religion, events, especially amongst white-collar workers for whom work output may be hard to measure.

At the workplace either the private or public sectors, research shows that 25% Return on Investment (ROI) is lost monthly due to improper time management exclusive of money lost due to ghost workers, theft amongst others.

Theft is not related to loss of cash alone but also to loss of time due to lateness, every employee wants to be paid as at when due, no employee wants to be owed, every employee wants to get pay rise at any prospect, but no employee pays attention to little theft committed prominently amongst which is time theft which can adversely affect employee’s pay as a result of dwindling profit due to the scenario painted above. Effective time management is one of the most precious assets as time lost can never be reversed back.

In conclusion as was said by Mr. Afolabi Abiodun the MD/CEO SBTel & Devices Limited the provider of the award winning Human Resources Time Management Solution TAMS in the Punch newspaper of 10th May 2016 (http://www.punchng.com/sb-telecoms-honours-punctual-employees/) – “The soul of any business in this world is punctuality. For any business to be effective, it must be able to strictly follow a timeline to achieve its desired result and for such an organization to achieve that, employees must be able to effectively conclude their tasks before deadlines”.

In a bid to promote punctuality and efficiency at the workplace, SB Telecoms and Devices has said it will honour the most punctual employees in Nigeria with the Time and Access Management Systems Ambassadors Award at the TAMS Summit on May 19, 2016.

The time management event will take place in Lagos during which over 15 employees from the public and private sectors of the economy will be honoured for punctuality at their respective workplaces over the last one year.

Speaking on the awards, the Chief Executive Officer, SB Telecoms and Devices, Mr. Afolabi Abiodun, said the awards event was organised to recognise employees of organisations who understood the importance of punctuality at the workplace, as well as its overall contribution to the organisation’s effectiveness.

“The soul of any business in this world is punctuality. For any business to be effective, it must be able to strictly follow a timeline to achieve its desired result and for such an organisation to achieve that, employees must be able to effectively conclude their tasks before deadlines,” Abiodun said.

He added, “The TAMS Ambassadors award, therefore, honours employees who are always punctual at their workplace and diligently work on the tasks assigned to them.

“These sets of people need to be encouraged, and shown as an example to other employees in organisations across the country. This is necessary because in this era when people arrive their workplace ridiculously late, giving all sorts of excuses, these few people, through our TAMS Application Portal, will be rewarded for always being punctual and diligent at their workplaces during the course of the past one year.”

The TAMS Ambassadors award is an initiative of TAMS Nigeria, and created to eradicate ‘African Time Syndrome”’ and appreciate timeliness in organisations across Nigeria. It was an idea that  started in 2014 and has so far rewarded over100 of the most punctual staff in the private and public sectors across Nigeria.

04 May IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY WITH TAMS

Businessman touching ROI (return on investment) over skyline background

The place of work; be it an office or a factory, a business or any other organization, is not just a set up where people get paid for their presence and attendance for a few hours. The salary is in return for work done and the amount of work completed reflects the worker’s productivity; which in turn is determined by a series of factors besides qualifications and experience.

The level of the employee’s productivity in any organization is largely responsible for the profit making ability of the organization and its survival in the long run.

However, an employee’s productivity or performance is dependent on a series of factors many of which are determined by the employer and the environment provided for the work force.

It’s up to the entrepreneur or manager to find the most effective ways of deriving the best out of the work force. The manager may feel his/her job is only to recruit the best and most qualified people for the task at hand but the truth is that these employees could be turned into a big asset that will transform the business completely; that is if they are made to work happily and show their true potentials.

So in this article, we will be sharing with you some of the best ways time attendance can improve productivity and growth of the organization.

Most companies today are looking for any break they can find as far as cutting costs is concerned. While many scour through many aspects of their businesses, they often end up overlooking one simple area that could save them thousands. Tracking time and attendance is a basic function of any company but this is always inadequately managed which employees often take advantage of. There are a number of areas that tracking time and attendance can help you cut your costs and boost your profits.

The most obvious way that tracking time and attendance helps improve your profits is by ensuring that employees are only getting paid for what they do. Most companies still rely on hourly wages to pay most of their employees hence tracking time and attendance efficiently helps you avoid overpaying your employees. Simply assuming that each employee is working a full day or allowing employees to turn in hours that they’re keeping themselves is a recipe for disaster. Even something as simple as coming into work five minutes late can add up quickly when you aren’t tracking time and attendance correctly. That five minutes you’re paying for adds up to about twenty one hours per year.

Most companies try to do their best at tracking time and attendance, but the process can be tricky. Buddy punching, wherein a pal punches the timecard of their friend who is running late or leaving a bit early, can ruin your efforts at tracking time and attendance and add up to thousands of dollars in overpayment each year. Employees do it because they don’t realize the expense involved, and most department managers are so overworked that tracking time and attendance is the last thing they think about. But these issues are only one aspect of tracking time and attendance.

Many companies have employees who are on salary, and they assume that tracking time and attendance isn’t much of a big deal. But even your salaried employees need to show up for work and get their job done. Just meeting a quota is fine, and once their quota is met they may be less inclined to work. When you’re tracking time and attendance effectively you can ensure that your employees are working a reasonable amount of time each week. This can boost their overall productivity and raise your profits. You don’t have to turn tracking time and attendance into a huge burden for your managers, either, since software for tracking time and attendance is readily available.

SBTel & Devices can provide your company with cutting edge tools for tracking time and attendance efficiently. The solution is easy to install and simple to use and can reduce buddy punching, overpayment, and much more. With tools for tracking time and attendance you can help boost your company’s bottom line and ensure that you’re actually getting what you pay for. There are many options for tracking time and attendance effectively, and taking the time to add tracking time and attendance software to your company will be one of the smartest moves you make.

28 Apr EFFECT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON PRODUCTIVITY

Social media Addiction

Take some time to read through this scenario: You are visiting an organization on appointment. After exchanging pleasantries with the receptionist at the front desk, you informed her of your mission. She responded grudgingly while paying scant attention to you as she seamlessly returned to what she was doing before you interrupted her. Curious, you wondered what could have consumed her thoughts so deeply, only to discover that she was lost in her own world of social media apps.

Has this ever happened to you? How did you or how will you handle it? For all intents and purposes, social media is a two-edged sword. On one hand, it is a tool that has enhanced information dissemination and social engagement at the swipe of your fingers. Social media has become a new trend in the workplace that cannot be ignored due to its numerous advantages, from analyzing potential employees’ profiles to promoting a business and encouraging interaction between employees. Most Social Media platforms offer free advertising and other benefits for companies both big and small scale.

On the other hand, it is a syndrome that has eaten deep into daily routines, thus hampering productivity, and ultimately, returns on investment (ROI) due to time theft. It is often said that “Time waits for no one and a lost time can never be bought or brought back”. According to a study by Nucleus Research, companies that allow employees use social media during the work day lose 1.5 percent productivity.

“Most employees check their “inboxes” too often, constantly interrupting their work.  Employees estimate that they spend about 4 hours a day (half a workday) managing multiple “inboxes.” The time spent on social media however is spent more for personal reasons than work reasons, with only 6.8% of the participants indicating that they use social media solely for work purposes. The study suggests that social media on platforms such as Facebook have “shattered the divide between business and personal use” and often encourage such intermingling further exacerbating this issue.”  (Ott, 2010)

Social networking can also hurt the relationship between employees.  Negative messages can be sent through social networking sites and can hamper the ability of employees to work together.  “Additionally, social networking provides a way for employees to communicate with one another throughout the day without anyone overhearing, leading to an increase in off-task conversations.” (Zeiger) In order to ensure work related discussions were kept internally, one organization developed their own “internal Facebook” where employees discussed issues with each other rather than taking to a public forum such as Facebook or Twitter.

The last disadvantage of social networking in the workplace is the potential breach of confidentiality and the tarnishing of the corporate image by employees and managers; this means that employees can inadvertently post confidential business information on blogs, wikis, or Facebook. Negative posts intentionally posted by disgruntled employees can also tarnish the image of the company because the information can be so quickly shared between users.  These breaches in confidentiality between the business and its employees can lead to much bigger issues down the line.

Inevitably, social media addiction leads to low productivity of individuals and adversely affects company goals.
