The reality most times is that projections, however optimistic, may not be attained if proper procedures and tools are not put in place.

It is a well-known fact that for any corporate agenda to be successful, it must be understood and driven by the workforce. Harvey Mackay noted that “Your workforce is your most valuable asset. The knowledge and skills they have represent the fuel that drives the engine of business- and you can leverage that knowledge”. Clearly, an empowered and organized workforce is critical for organizational success.

So, when listing the year’s resolution, I would like to advise business owners that what should be at the top of the list are tools that facilitate the processes that are geared towards the actualization of those goals. 04 Jan Getting Back into Work Mode after the Holidays

welcomeBack BannerThe thought of returning to work after a vacation filled with family time, gifts and good food can be a bit daunting. The last thing you want to think about is coming into work to deal with an inbox full of emails. Don’t worry though; there are several tips and tricks for this situation. Here is some helpful advice you and your employees can use to get back into work mode after a long holiday vacation.

Try to start early. We know this might sound crazy because again, you don’t even want to think about going back to work, but doing this could make the transition from holiday break a little less stressful. By arriving a little bit early you have the opportunity to get things done without the distraction that your coworkers may bring and it allows you to get a head start on the 500 emails awaiting your reply. So come in a little early, it will benefit you in the long run.

Do the simple things first. Starting your first day back with easier tasks will help you gain the momentum to get everything done. Go through your email and remove all the ones that require no work on your part. If the subject line suggests that you may have to do something, go ahead and set that email aside for now. Clear all of the clutter off of your desk providing you with a neat and tidy work environment to get back into the swing of things!

Make a list. Dive into those emails you had set aside earlier. Each time you find something that you need to do, write it down on a piece of paper creating a to-do list for yourself. Now you have no unread emails and everything that you need to accomplish is written down right in front of you. This makes it easier to check things off as you get them done while only focusing on one task at a time.

Don’t let the thought of returning to work after the holidays overwhelm you. Try to start early, complete the simple tasks first, and make yourself a to-do list. Following these tips will bring you back into work mode without all of the stress that comes with it!

13 Dec Tips to Stay Healthy and Happy During the Holidays

safety

Christmas, New Year’s — these are supposed to be times of celebration, togetherness, and happiness. Yet, they can bring challenges to our physical and emotional health. Here are eight tips for staying healthy and happy during this season of joy.

  1. Eat well. It’s common to pack on 5-10 pounds during the holiday season, but there are ways you can eat both healthy and well! Know which foods are high in caloric content and low in nutrition. Don’t deprive yourself of such treats, but indulge in moderation. Eat smaller meals instead of “saving yourself” for one huge buffet. Opt for healthy options at home, and when visiting others, bring a healthy dish to share. Be careful of liquid calories, including alcoholic beverages.
  2. Stay active. Exercise is just as important during the holidays as any other time of the year. You should be active at least four to five times a week, preferably with some aerobic exercise every day. Enlist your loved ones to join you for quality bonding time.
  3. Prevent illness and injuries. Colds and the flu are most prevalent in the winter. Prevent them by washing your hands regularly and urging others to do the same. Stay warm by dressing in layers. Watch young ones and assist the elderly, who are at increased risk of falls and other injuries during this time.
  4. Check your heating system. Install a carbon monoxide detector and test it once a month. Keep grills and generators out of the house, and don’t run your car for long periods of time in the garage. Most residential fires also occur in the winter; never leave fireplaces, stoves, and candles unattended.
  5. Travel safely. Whether you are going down the block or halfway across the world, follow extra precautions. Give yourself plenty of time in the additional holiday traffic. Never drink and drive. Be on the lookout for reports of extreme weather and heed warnings. If you’re traveling away from home, make sure to pack and take your medications. Know how to contact your doctor when you are away and have a medical problem, and where the local ER is.
  6. De-stress. Holidays can be a stressful time. You may be working, and feel the stress of managing your work duties along with additional commitments to your friends and family. You may feel the financial stress of gifts and the interpersonal stress of conflicts. Try to anticipate sources of stress and develop a plan to manage them. This may involve committing to fewer get-togethers or setting a tighter budget. Don’t feel guilty; you have to take care of yourself before you can take of others.
  7. Help others. Depression and suicidality increase during the holidays. Watch for signs of depression among your friends and family. Take an active role to support those in need. Invite those colleagues or friends who are alone over the holidays to spend time with you. Volunteer and give to those less fortunate.
  8. Treat yourself. The holiday spirit is about helping others around you, but you also have to make time to take care of yourself. So treat yourself with something over the holidays. It may be something as simple as sleep. Wake up late and enjoy a day of rest; you need it. How about reading that book you’ve been meaning to for a long time, or getting a manicure or massage? Take the time to do the things that make you happy.

30 Nov FREE HR SOFTWARE FOR SMALL COMPANIES

hr

The startup phase of a company is very critical. It is a time when the owner is experimenting, learning, exploring and venturing into new areas. At that critical phase in the life of a business, whatever resources in terms of capital, labour, strategic and operational tools that can be rendered would be welcome.

For the small business or startup, that actually means a lot. As a dreamer, builder and doer, the only thing that matters to the entrepreneur is the successful launch and survival of the company. It is not surprising that as employees grow, the last thing on the business owner’s mind is additional cost on human resource management software.

While giveaways have never lost attraction and appreciation, they are few and far between. For the business owner, however, a giveaway is meaningless if it does not help to save cost. That is what TAMS, a robust homegrown time management-focused human resource management application, patented by the Federal Government of Nigeria as an “invention… for public good”, has committed to doing with its freemium classic account for companies with less than 25 employees.

17 Nov HR Practitioners Discuss Employee Motivation

motivateWithout a doubt motivation is a key factor to getting work done. Not just done, but done well. It has been proven that motivation pushes an employee to succeed, seeing that a well-motivated employee goes the extra mile to get things done.
According to Wikipedia, “Motivation is the reason for people’s actions, desires, and needs. Motivation is also one’s direction to behavior, or what causes a person to want to repeat a behavior”.

“Employees who believe that management is concerned about them as a whole person– not just an employee – are more productive, more satisfied, more fulfilled. Satisfied employees mean satisfied customers, which leads to profitability.” Anne M. Mulcahy

There are always internal & external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested and committed to a job, role or subject, or to make an effort to attain a goal. Motivation results from the interaction of both conscious and unconscious factors such as the intensity of desire or need, incentive or reward value of the goal and expectations of the individual and of his or her peers.

However, there are divergent views on the method or factors that best motivate employees as majority of practitioners opine that what motivates employee ‘A’ might not motivate employee ‘B’ or that what might motivate employee ‘A’ at a particular time might not at another time, depending on his or her circumstances. For example, Mr. James of ZAYZ & Co. won an all-expense vacation for emerging as the best employee. But at that time he had defaulted on his house rent and was being threatened with eviction. The holiday trip, as exciting as it seems, is not likely to motivate Mr. James at that point in time.

Below is an excerpt of a survey on HR practitioners’ views with regards to the best factors that motivate employees.

“I find out it depends on the company culture. For some team bonding activities such as trips or excursions works. For some recognition works, respect in the work place also works”. Peju Ayo-Fisher

“If the company culture allows it then it will fly. But any organization that wants to drive motivation will not have a one-size-fits-all motivation. It has to make it broad so that employees can pick what motivates them because it is usually the case of one man’s meat is another man’ poison. It depends on individual employees…what motivates them? Some it is time-off, some not an 8-5 work hour (flexible working hour), etc.” Blessing Okorafor

“In my own opinion, you can’t accurately pick out which of the above is most effective in motivating employees haphazardly as there are several factors to be considered; who are your audience in terms of the employees you are looking to motivate. Are they entry level employees, mid-level managers or senior level managers? Note that the key thing is the employee value proposition. As it varies from person to person. So what might motivate an entry level officer might not necessarily motivate a senior level officer and vice versa. So for me, first is to know your audience (employees) and target the right motivation tools accurately to suit them.” Adesola Ige

“On motivation, I think it is important to look at the various theories of motivation and use this as a guide to determine the bouquet of offerings required to motivate employees along various Cadre, grade and importantly the values of the organization. Using the Maslow’s Hierarchy of need, the Herzberg Hygiene theory or the Adams theory etc will help in building a framework.” Yemi Ajayi

The diverse views clearly indicate that practitioners see employee motivation as an important contributor to organizational growth, and that the best way to go about it is knowing your audience and motivating them in line with company culture and what is likely to tickle their fancy.

tams site
As another business year draws gradually to a close, the management of SB Telecoms & Devices Limited expresses our profound appreciation for your support in 2017.

In line with our quest to sensitize, engage and motivate Nigerian employees to be highly productive performers in their organizations, we are pleased to inform you that the assessment window for the 2017/18 most productive employee is open from now till January 15, 2018.

The annual most productive employees initiative, known as TAMS Ambassadors Award, is designed to accommodate attendance and productivity metrics (TAMS Productivity Assessment or TPA). The metrics are aimed at challenging employees to be self-motivated and committed to self-development in order to deliver exceptional performances on a consistent basis.

How it Works

(a) Employees are urged to carry out self-evaluation on the stated metrics on the TPA Module.
(b) Afterwards, the supervisor evaluates the employee on the same metrics.
(c) The aggregate performance score will be added to the average annual attendance at work or duty post.
(d) While the TPA is used for the annual TAMS Ambassador selection, organisations can use it for evaluating employee productivity as they desire.

TAMS Ambassador Award

At the end of the year, 15 employees with the best TPA scores are selected. The top 3 win an all-expense paid trip to Dubai and 12 other winners are rewarded with consolation prizes.

To qualify for the 2017/2018 edition, Employee Assessment Scores are to be completed on or before 15th of January, 2018. Hence, we urge you to carry out the TPA so that your employees will be eligible for the 2017/18 TAMS Ambassador Award.
